If you haven't already noticed, Serendipity version 1.1 alpha4 now includes a new
theme configurator allowing theme designers to add colorsets and other configurable options directly into their themes, and allowing users of the themes to select these options from within the admin suite.
Now if you're wondering why I mention this development let me explain. Up till now any time a user wanted to change the colorset of a theme, lets say from blue to pink, the designer had to create two separate themes for the user to download and install, and the user then had to open the Smarty template files to change colorset or edit navbar menus etc.
This is a crazy situation because in most cases the differences between themes are very minor and most blog users have very little knowledge of html or stylesheets, and even less of Smarty or php.
Under the new system, the user will download just one theme, which they can do directly from within the admin suite if the theme exists in Spartacus, select their shiny new theme, and then simply select the options available to them from a series of input or select boxes - brilliant!
So if you're a user of Serendipity, or a theme designer who wants to experiment, make sure you have version 1.1 alpha4 (
get it here). Next, to see this in action, download my first draft of the
softenedcells/sunset theme which has the configuration option built in.
Over the next few weeks I'm going to thoroughly test this technology, with the goal being to upgrade carl blue and green into a single theme with multiple colorsets, and then do the same thing for andreas08. This is going to push Serendipity forward to levels never dreamed of before.
