Life in Germany

Many thanks to loyal readers of this blog who have put up with months of empty rss feeds. I'm back, I have Internet again, but it will be several days until I can start adding content again.

In the meantime, for those of ou who live in Germany, let me tell you I love this place, German people are so friendly and welcoming. The weather is almost as hot as Australia at the moment, our balcony thermometer regularly hits low 30's before lunch time.

I'll be trying to update my flickr page again soon, and I've also downloaded the latest s9y to have a play with it. Broken links on this site might get fixed soon, but also might take me a couple of weeks.

    funny thing about German people, really friendly to foreigners like me, but really unfriendly to each other. Doesn't make any sense.

    I don't think we're necessarily unfriendly to each other. I only don't think we're usually considered explicitly friendly, but good for you to have experienced it differently :-)

    A few German people have tried to educate me on the difference between fremd, bekannt and freund, which is a distinction that I just totally don't use at all. In the English speaking part of the world we often think of everyone as a friend and treat them all the same.

    German people prefer to take the time to get to know someone before considering them a friend, but foreigners seem to be different. Because we don't understand your finely crafted distinctions we just blindly bumble around using du and first-names with everyone we meet. Consequently we experience the softer more friendly side of German people. And secretly I think many German people want to be free of the rigid rules placed on them. This might be wrong, but its definitely a feeling I get.

    The whole "Du vs. Sie" thing is probably a nightmare coming from a culture where everyone regardless of personal relation is a you. It must be especially hard to find out that there's actually another way to adress someone: "Sie" plus first name, the so-called "Hamburgische Anrede". Hell, in some supermarkets or stores, you can even hear a version combining "Du" and "Frau XY" ... yes, we do have a funny language :-)

    Du vs Sie? you gotta be kidding. I ignore it, everyone is "du", makes life so much easier, and people here actually like it!
