Think about a successful advertising campaign, picture in your mind how you were first exposed to it's message, what impact did it have? In researching this article I found myself thinking of the impact that advertising has on my buying decisions, and I came up with a startling observation. I respond to branding messages, perhaps not immediately, but definitely at the buying stage.
Let me give you an example. Every night I have the TV on in the background while I work. My mind automatically switches off when the advertisements air, it has to be a pretty special ad to catch my attention. I don't read newspapers anymore, and hardly ever listen to the radio, so almost all of the advertising that I'm exposed to is in the form of billboards.
Now I'll give you three guesses what I notice. OK, forget that, I'll just tell you. Big bold as brass full-size billboards that fill my line of vision. Typically these are huge, on the side of buildings or scaffolding, or filling entire walls inside shopping precincts.
We bought our current car because of a billboard, and the other half points out all the clothing or shoe billboards she sees. To see an example of the sort of billboard that catches my attention, check out this
Outdoor Advertising site and click the mega signs link. Wouldn't that capture your attention?
Now the other great thing about this kind of billboard advertising is that they simply clip onto the building minimising damage and consent requirements, and they're extremely effective when placed in high traffic areas. This particular company, Wide Open Platform, is actually in South Africa, so you can see this kind of advertising is effective anywhere.
Now I guess you'll be asking yourself the obvious question, what good is this for my needs. Truth be told I don't need mega signs like these, but it does emphasise that high traffic, billboard style advertisements are effective, especially at the branding end of the marketing process, and I have used this style of advertising to great effect in my previous corporate life, and may do so again in the future. I wonder if our favourite Internet Gurus would benefit from using mega signs?
