I've taken a bit of an interest in the subject of big bold
Outdoor Advertising just recently, mostly because I think the same principles can be used online and I'm trying to learn how the experts do things.
Have a look at the 'Wear a Seat Belt' billboard, now this is clever. As for the guerilla marketing image on the mini, I've seen those when I've been driving around, now I know who's responsible Hah!
Outdoor advertising fascinates me because it's the one form of advertising I tend to notice. The other half notices everything, I think it's the designer in her, whereas I tend to be stuck in my own world most of the time and advertising has to really stand out to get my attention.
I think a lot of people are like this, which is probably why catapult billboards, guerilla marketing and airport baggage carousels are so effective. They stand out from the rest of the pack. Of course being a guy, you put a picture of a car or a good looking woman in front of me and I'm going to sit up and notice it, but usually I'd never notice road safety messages, this is why they need to be so bold with their ideas.
Ad blindness is a serious impediment to marketing your brand or product, so you need every advantage you can get. Why spend money on advertising that doesn't produce results. In fact using these principles I'm seriously reconsidering how I market this very blog. What about you, got any thoughts?
