Remember a couple of months ago I proudly boasted of having sold the car and bought a bike instead, and then a couple of weeks after that I mentioned boasting doesn't become me?
Well, all of that seems so long ago now, in fact these days I'm perfectly comfortable riding the 14km round trip into Ronda and not really thinking much of it. Today I'm even attempting two trips into Ronda, a combined distance of 28kms.
I know, you're all really jealous, I can feel it as you read this post. My fitness has improved that much, I feel better, I look better, and my mental acuity is improved, although on that score I should mention I've always been a brightspark but now I feel almost superhuman.
Of course two months isn't really enough to make me a superman, and the camera obstinately refuses to show the real me that I see in the mirror every morning, instead preferring to show me a version of myself from a few months ago before I started cycling; those were the days where I may have been lucky to drink a glass of water every other day yet happily drank 18-20 cups of coffee per day.
I won't bore you with details of how much more water I drink now, or how much less coffee I drink but the ratio seems to have flipped around. Water actually tastes great these days, maybe my body is rewarding me by allowing my tastebuds to actually enjoy water again.
So I suppose some of you might be wondering how much difference to my weight this has all made. Honestly I can't say, we don't have a set of bathroom scales but I do know my thighs are less chunky and showing more signs of muscle.
Similarly my back and chest are less, um, how to say it, well less bouncy I suppose. In fact I was tickled pink the other day when the other half observed that she could feel my ribs again. We'll be discreet and not say why she was feeling my ribs, although saying she was giving me a big squishy bear hug is not far off the truth.
Dear readers, I know most of you couldn't imagine a life with no car, but seriously stop and ponder how much better off you might be. It's a sad statistic that people in the western world are more obese now than ever before, and I'd hate to cast aspersions in your direction yet I must ask, wouldn't you love to feel this overwhelming pride at noticing your health improve?

I can't image riding them in the northern part of Spain (Basque Country, precisely)

As I recall Ronda, the trick would be the vertical parts of the rides. I think riding from down below up to the town would certainly get your thighs burning.
