Supersol is one of the supermarkets in Ronda, there are actually two of them, but that's not important. Most of the time when I go to the supermarket I see chewing gum, condoms, cards for recharging mobile phones etc hanging from the hooks in front of the checkout register. Today was different.
Today what I saw was a series of tags with monetary denominations on them like 1€, 2€, 5€, and 10€, but not for anything I would need, instead for charity, specifically for www.1kilodeayuda.es. This struck me as unusual, so instead of picking up a chocolate bar I bought a 1€ tag, which means that 1€ that I didn't need has gone to help kids with their educations in developing countries.
That made me feel good, so good in fact I'm writing about it here. I like the idea of little tags at the supermarket, nobody is asking me to donate, there is no pressure, I just pick one up if I want to. And because nobody is asking me, the other people at the checkout don't feel obliged either.
Being socially responsible is something that I think is a personal decision, just like lending money through Kiva. All in all I feel great about donating money to 1 Kilo de Ayuda, and really good about loaning money through Kiva, and I don't feel guilty about only donating 1€ like I might if someone was standing on a street corner asking for donations.
I wonder when the other supermarkets will start offering charity tags at the checkout register?
