Anyone who wants to make money online knows that one of the easiest programs that pays is Google's AdSense, a pay per click program that website owners can sign up for. Advertisers bid cents or more for each click that brings traffic to their websites, the aim being to convert the site visitor into a buyer. Smaller
niche websites often perform better than larger websites because they are more targeted to a particular keyword, and that attracts specialist advertisers who may pay more.
I'm not going to tell you how to sign up for AdSense, nor am I going to tell you how advertisers determine the rate they're willing to pay. You and I are make money online people and we only care about getting money from people clicking the ads Google puts on our websites.
There aren't any AdSense ads on this site, so I can't tell you to look at the ads, but you probably have ads on your own site so take a look at them in relation to the content on your page. Chances are the ads are somewhat similar, something Google calls being relevant.
Relevance is important for Google AdSense because otherwise your site visitors won't click the ads on your website. Of course you can't tell your visitors to click the ads so you really want the most relevant ads possible.
The problem with AdSense though is that we all look at the ads on our websites and start wondering how we can increase our earnings per click, so of course we check the cost per click that advertisers pay to try and work out how we can change our content to attract better paying ads.
Targeting higher paying keywords is rarely effective because almost every AdSense publisher tries to do the same thing, I guess we all get blinded by the idea of earning a consistent $8 or $10 dollars per click.
Because so many publishers are chasing the same high paying keywords the competition to rank for the keywords is intense. Insurance, weight loss, webhosting, relationships, these are all super competitive and it's unlikely most of us can ever attract enough traffic to make it worthwhile.
This is where is gets even trickier, the less traffic we get, the less Google pay us. My own experience suggests we need to attract at least 2,500 unique visitors per day from search engines to get the best AdSense CTR.
The solution then is to target lower paying keywords, but dominate the search results and get as much of the traffic as you can. Effectively you'll be chasing the low hanging fruit, and that's smart working. Trust me, you'll be a lot more successful in the long run.

With some of my niches I look for a minimum of 2€ CPC - remember I'm in Europe so the adwords tool and my adsense panel show prices in Euros not dollars.
I know other niche marketers that are happy to accept a minimum of 50c per click. If I'm going to invest time building a niche site and then promoting it I want a to earn decent money, so my rule of thumb is if the niche site takes me less than a week to build and promote then I go for 50c CPC, but if the site is a long term project that needs constant updating, then I pick a higher paying niche.
I have one site where the CPC is over 20€ CPC but it needs a lot of work because the niche is so competitive. If my lower paying niche sites start to earn more than it, then I'll close it down and focus on low paying CPC.

It isn't hard to find good keywords, I personally use a CPC of 2€ as my minimum, which gives a nice income from AdSense, but I'm not stupid enough to target keywords with CPC in the 20€ range because they're too competitive and I'd need a very large site or a lot of backlinks to rank for the terms.
Also, I have a secret weapon, I use Micro Niche Finder to confirm the competition for a keyword so I know I can easily rank for the term and start earning money.
