Carnival in Ronda

Last week we had our annual Carnival here in Ronda, which is normally a great little procession and a lot of fun. Nothing like the Brazillion Carnivals, or even like Sydney's Gay Pride, Spanish carnivals are mostly about people letting go politically and lampooning local politicians.

If you don't know, the president of Spain is José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, also known as Zapatito which pretty much means small shoe, the inference being he punches way below his weight. I'm not really into politics unlike my Spanish friends, but I really thought this picture was amusing from Carnival. Busco a Zapatero means I'm looking for Zapatero...

    Hi Carl, In case you haven't come across it, and I may have recommended this book to you before. If so, sorry to repeat myself. The book is Everything but the Squeal, a year of pigging out in northern Spain by John Barlowe a Brit who married a Spanish girl and teaches college there. I know you don't live near Galicia but you might enjoy it. He sets out to eat every part of the pig and describes eating and travelling around Galicia. There is a great description of a Carnival in Laza in the south of Galicia. It is one of a few very wierd carnivals in Spain. The culmination of the carnival is on a day know as the Dirty Day. Dirty Day is really quite appalling, perhaps you already know about it. He also meets up with the Fidel castro's cousin. Apparently the Castros are from Galicia.
