When you look around at the state of the world it is hard to imagine the global society being ready for the sorts of changes the singularity will bring.
Humanity seems to be lurching from crisis to crisis, and the technology required to solve our problems is still over the horizon.
My feeling is that if we persevere we'll figure out ways of solving our most pressing issues, and what concerns me most is our propensity for savagery and greed. The 21st century should be the beginning of a golden age for humanity, one where we evolve into a better, more compassionate and sophisticated species.
The singularity promises to be a time when our entire economic system will be transformed away from the existing market-oriented economy to a more needs based economy. Skills that enrich society rather than our employers will likely become more important.
As individuals we will be prized for our compassion to others and our passionate pursuit of excellence. What we contribute to society and the environment, or to humanity's cultural development will define our value.
An individual's value will no longer be determined by our financial status or earning potential.
This kind of future sounds utopian, definitely socialist, and possibly even communist. I do consider that my views lean to socialism, but not at the expense of individual liberty, and it is for this reason that I've always opposed the 'peoples republic' regimes that so many have been forced to live under.
This is why the singularity excites me so much, true participatory democracy will be at its core. You see, in the singularity we will be able to use technology to ensure every individual has their voice heard and their vote counted. In the singularity no individual should ever be fearful of the authorities.
John Lennon said it best when he penned the words to Imagine. If a few more of us lived by those words...
