For some time now I've wanted to convert the Serendipity default theme to tableless css only design, which is a process that has undergone several iterations. Every time I thought I had it worked out another problem would present itself. Then Matthias (the man responsible for most of the German translations on this site) emailed me something he had put together that he adapted from Alex Robinson's One True Layout. After that history started to be made.

We are now making available a beta of this template and ask for comments, bug reports and fixes, and anything else you think needs to be done, because our intention is that this template will replace the current serendipity v3.0 that ships with Serendipity. For those of you who aren't familiar with the template, a competition was held in February/March 2006 to design the new default template for Serendipity. My template was chosen, and became known as serendipity v3.0, although the folder it lives in is 'carl_contest'.

So, what do you need to know?

To avoid confusion and allow easy testing without overwriting any existing template, we have provided the update as serendipity v3.1, and this template will unzip into a folder named serendipity_v3_1, although it will ship as carl_contest once it is rolled into the nightlies. A couple of months ago I ported Andreas Viklund's 1024px template to serendipity. Unfortunately in my haste I screwed up the preview mode.

Fixing this has been a constant reminder in my calendar but other things have kept me from taking the time to do so. I really apologise to all users of the serendipity version of 1024px template for this omission.

Happily, the template has now been updated, and I also added a red color option adapted from femina amens, a user of the blogger version.

I've had a quite a few requests for the smallbiz01 template to support three columns instead of the existing layout of navlist-content-sidebar. I'm happy to provide this, but there is a proviso, this is a quick fix and both sidebars are always present at this time, so if you wanted to use only one sidebar I'm afraid the template won't yet support this. I plan a further update with more options.

The license for this template and the 3 col update is GPL - please respect my work and leave my link in place, its the only recognition I get since I everything I do is freely available.
