A few years ago when mobile phones had just started to incorporate little organisers and text messaging was becoming popular, I remember being told by an excitable gadget savvy mobile phone salesperson that this was the future.
With much waving of hands and bright-eyed eagerness she proceeded to tell me they would soon have camera's, video, the Internet and so much more built directly into them. I remember she used the expression convergence to describe this merging of technology.
At the time I think I was slightly sceptical yet today mobile phones do all of these things. That experience taught me something about predicting the future which has served me well. My partner and I use the secret to predict property values, economic activity and so much more.
You see people who are passionate about an industry tend to stick together, after all they see themselves as industry insiders, and they also drive that industry, even if they aren't decision makers. They may be salespeople, they may be end-users, they may even be the developers.
What they have in common is their passion, and what that means for us is that we can use their ideas to form predictions. And the communications world is all abuzz at present about the next generation of mobile technology.
Notice I said mobile technology not mobile phones. The days when a mobile phone was just a mobile phone are well and truly over. And the future of mobile technology is looking very exciting.
What I'm hearing is that the convergence of technology is going to continue, and that new functions will be incorporated that haven't yet been seen in mobile technology. We already have a phone with internet, video, camera, pda etc, but the next generation being worked on by those who want it will include the following;
- Similar computing power to existing desktop pc's
- Massive data storage, allowing dvd quality video to be downloaded directly onto your mobile and then viewed, possibly via onboard video projector.
- Full motion games console built-in
- Home networking, and able to control a range of devices such as security system, lighting, appliances etc
- Basic medical monitoring such as pulse, blood presure, temperature, pedometer, probably with gps locator for emergencies.
And all this within a device smaller than today's mobile phone.
